What to do in the area

Being on the border of Brittany and Pays de la Loire, there's plenty to choose from. You can head north for Normandy and the coast or South towards the Loire, Brittany to the west and Le Mans/Paris to the east.

Here are a few ideas (by area) :

Ambrieres-les Vallees: set on the river Mayenne there is excellent mini golf, tennis courts, kayaking and an open air pool (July/August ). Cafe/restaurants and supermarkets etc (open Sunday morning)

Bagnoles de l'Orne: Just over the border in the Orne department this spa town is well worth a visit with Paris style cafe society, casino and lake.

Fougeres: Medieval castle on the Brittany border, large range of shops and restaurants, ten pin bowling, large indoor swimming pool, market every Saturday morning.

Gorron: A small market is held every Wednesday morning. This town has all local amenities with swimming pool and an activity centre which includes 9 hole of swin- golf ( uses a three faced club which is easier and safer for all the family to enjoy), zip wires/tree-climbing and canoeing.

Lassay les Chateau: The guided tour is recommended. Market day is Wednesday.

Laval: An historical art-filled town with museums and restaurants. Railway station with high speed train (TGV) to Paris. L'Aquabulle for swimming. Golf course.

Mayenne: A picturesque town straddling the river with chateau and good shopping. River trips during the summer. Markets on Monday & Saturday.

St. Fraimbault (Orne): A very pretty village which is renowed for it's spectacular flower displays in the summer and in particular the festival on August 15th (Les Flories d’Antan) Lakeside cafe and pedaloes.

By activity.......

The department of Mayenne  has almost 2000 miles of routes, often circular routes, open to ramblers and cyclists.
